Do You Need an On Air Light for Your Podcast?

Posted by 1st Door Imports on

Strictly speaking, no. Your podcast will sound the same without one. But if you record at home, an On Air light solves a real problem: the knock on the door, the vacuum starting up, or someone walking in halfway through a take. And if you're on camera, it doubles as set decoration.

The signs mentioned here are from our own shop, $29.95 each, as of October 2026.

What an On Air light actually does

  • It warns the household. A lit sign outside the door says "recording, don't come in" without anyone needing to ask. It's the same reason radio stations have them.
  • It gets you in the zone. Plenty of hosts find that flipping the switch marks the start of the session, like a red light in a studio.
  • It looks good on camera. On a video podcast or stream, a lit sign in the background makes a spare room look like a set.

When it's worth having

It's most useful if you record at home with other people around, if you record interviews you can't redo, or if you're on video. If you live alone and record audio only, it's a nice-to-have rather than a need.

Where to put it

Outside the door

This is the classic use: a sign above or beside the door, switched on while you record. Each of our signs runs on a USB power cord with an inline on/off switch, so you'll need an outlet or USB port nearby. You switch it on and off by hand at the cord's switch.

On camera

For video, hang the sign on the wall behind you, slightly off to one side so it doesn't sit right behind your head. Check the shot before you record, since a bright sign in frame can throw off your camera's exposure.

Both

Some hosts use one sign outside the door and a different one on the set wall.

Which sign to pick

Red On Air LED sign with an over-ear headphone graphic

  • On Air Headset sign: bold "ON AIR" with an over-ear headphone graphic, lit in red. Made for podcasters and streamers.
  • ON AIR Studio sign: the classic broadcast look, lit in red. Good on a door.
  • Studio sign: "STUDIO" with a vintage microphone, lit in blue. Better as on-camera decor than as a warning, since it says where you are rather than that you're live.

Red is the traditional warning color, so for the door, pick one of the red On Air signs. Each one is 12 × 8 inches and comes with a USB wall adapter, a power cord with an on/off switch and a hanging chain.
