How to Hang an LED Sign in a Window (or on a Wall)

Posted by 1st Door Imports on

Our LED signs are made to hang from their chain, with no drilling into the sign itself and no wiring. Here's how to get one up neatly in a shop window or on a wall at home.

What's in the box

  • The sign: about 12 × 8 inches of engraved clear acrylic with a black acrylic frame along the top
  • A metal hanging chain
  • A USB power cord with an inline on/off switch
  • A USB wall adapter

You'll need to supply one or two hooks, depending on how you hang it.

Step 1: Peel the protective film

The frame ships with a thin protective film. Peel it off before you hang the sign. It's much easier to do on a table than on a wall.

Step 2: Pick your spot

  • Near power. The sign plugs into an outlet through the included USB wall adapter, or into any USB port. Measure from your spot to the outlet before you commit.
  • Facing the right way. The design is engraved into clear acrylic, so it's visible from both sides, but text reads backwards from behind. In a window, hang it so the lettering reads correctly from the street.
  • At eye level for your audience. In a shop window, that's roughly the height of a passerby's eyes, or a little higher if people will see it from a car. At home, hang it where you'd hang a picture.
  • Against a darker background. The design shows up best against a darker wall or the inside of a dim shop.

Step 3: Choose a hook

The sign is light, but pick a hook rated for more than its weight to be safe.

  • Window, from above: a screw-in cup hook or ceiling hook in the window frame or ceiling. This is the steadiest option.
  • Window, on the glass: a suction-cup hook rated for the weight. Clean the glass first so it holds.
  • Wall: a picture hook, nail or removable adhesive hook rated for the weight.

Step 4: Hang it and level it

Hang the chain over the hook (or two hooks for a wider spread) and adjust it until the sign hangs level. Step back, or go outside if it's in a window, and check it from where people will actually see it.

Step 5: Plug in and tidy the cord

Plug the cord into the USB wall adapter, then the adapter into the outlet. Run the cord along the window frame or wall with a few adhesive cord clips so it isn't dangling in view. Leave the inline switch somewhere you can reach it, since that's how you'll turn the sign on and off each day.

Care

Wipe the sign with a soft, dry cloth. Skip glass cleaner and paper towels, which can scratch or haze acrylic.
